From Ahimsa to Apathy in 58 Years

From Ahimsa to Apathy in 58 Years

One might say that the independence of India was a truly defining moment in the nation's history. One might say that it was a truly black day for the entire subcontinent, depending on the way one looks at it. For parties that subscribe to the first line of thought, the plethora of possibilities and the manifold broadening of horizons that occured for Indian citizens after independence has far outshadowed the problems, if any, that one might see in the day to day running of the country. The flip side of the line-of-thought-coin is that it's not the independence, per se, that was a disgrace, but the way in which it was achieved and the horrendous repercussions that were and still are felt.

Ahimsa, by definintion, is non-violence. However, it doesn't stop at that. Ahimsa means that a person voluntarily chooses not to commit violence despite that fact that they are fully capable of inflicting untold injury on someone. Now, this definition of Ahimsa changes the perspective with which we view the non-violence movement that purportedly brought India independence. According to Gandhi's ideology, if someone slaps you in the face, you should turn the other cheek. Thence, the perpetrator would feel ashamed at his own gaucheness and apologise to you. However, if you analyse this scenario carefully, you will see that you are being oppressed and are succumbing to the oppression. It is said that succumbing to oppression is also a crime. If you don't cry out against oppression, you are as much at fault as the oppressor. Therefore, Gandhi's ideology is a little flawed in accepting, nay, condoning the oppressor's deeds by turning the other cheek.

Still, I think that flawed though it was, enough cheeks turned that the British Raj had to take notice and leave the country, albeit not without partitioning it, but I digress. Everyone was happy that India had independence, that Ahimsa worked, that India was the only nation in the world that gained independence without war. Ahimsa was entrenched deeply into the minds of Indians, which is not an entirely bad thing. However, somewhere down the line, "turn the other cheek" metamorphosed into "turn the other way". A classic (if you can call it that) example is the rape of a mentally retarded young woman in a Mumbai Local train some years back. There were four other people (all men) in the train compartment who could have come to the poor girl's aid, but none had the courage to stand up to a petty goon. I am sure if all four of them had come together to fight that bastard, they could have overpowered him. The sheer lack of will and the moral turptitude exhibited in this heinous crime and the equally horrendous apathy shown by the men in the compartment is not only sad, but an incontrovertible sign that Ahimsa has turned into Apathy.

One point I would disagree with ..

Turn the other cheek -- has nothing to do with being oppressed. Gnadhi always fought oppression. He started the Civil Disobedience Movement which clearly said to the government -- that we do not agree with this policy. So we will not abide by these laws. But in being non violent he said .. even though we dont agree with the policies, we wont resort to violent means. So he stood up against oppression but in a non violent way . I dont see the case of being oppressed ?

I also do not see the relation in "Turn the other cheek" and "Turn the other way" . I guess thats just a way of life where ppl have stopped caring bt each other and issues in the society. It happens in USA too. Do you think many people would turn to the help of a person who is being mugged at some store ? I think not .. and America never had a Ahimsa movement to ingrain this attitude into them.

btw, really well written

Anubhav,

Your naivette is laughable. I have precisely mentioned that physical oppression is what Gandhi said people should put up with, which is wrong, wrong, wrong.

As to whether someone in the US would help someone being mugged, WHO THE FUCK GIVES A FUCK? I am talking about India, you remember? That's the country you were born in and grew up to be an engineer in. Remember?

In fact in being violent , one would only have justified the means the British government took . It requires courage to take a stand .. and that too in a rightful way.

Meghneel said...

Pray tell, what "means" are you talking about?

Anonymous said...

Well, the example of US was given to give u an analogy as to , its not Gandhian Ahimsa which has changed to the apathy in the minds of the people. Its a general attitude that the society has taken. To blame it on Gandhi or Gandhian philosophy is what I find wrong.

The oppressive tactics. Trying to use force on the people to get things done is what I am talking about.

Meghneel said...

The roots can easily be traced to Gandhian Philosophy. Not only is the laity's psyche been compromised, it reflects in our foreign policy for so long now. Pakistan's invasion of Kashmir: We did nothing

Chinese War: Nothing

Next Paki war: We CONCEDED territory despite our army having reached Lahore.

Mumbai Bomb Blasts: Dawood is in Dubai, India doing nothing.

Parliament attacked: We posted watchmen along the loc.

Period

And how do u actually trace it to Gandhian philosophy ?

To blame a man who fought oppression all his life .. for our shortcomings in not being able to gather the courage to put a goon to justice when the time arises .. is something I find ridiculous.

Think about it .. If Gandhi was one of the 4 men out in the train, would he have kept quiet ? and let what happened happen ?

So , why blame Gandhi for our timidity ?

Meghneel said...

What would gandhi-on-the train have said? "Please rape me, not that girl?"

Anubhav,

All this bickering aside, I implore you to please read the blog at least another 10 times and then see that I have NEVER made a connection for our present apathy to Gandhi's philosophy. In fact I have brought out the irony of such a great thought process being corrupted by time, but I guess you have missed the point theiya.

If it is indeed so .. why this sentence ?

Meghneel said...

aup,

i had said that would write a blog about this.

Sorry,
The sentence is misleading to say the least. I was giving a reason for me not to write a big comment. The sentence turns out that it was not necessary for you to write a blog about this..
My bad

Marvadi,
I think there has been a gross misjudgement on your part in understanding the sentiment of the article and therefore the argument.
The article is not Gandhi bashing..though I could do with a little bit of that :-))It expresses its ire over people's misinterpretation of an idea(non-violence) and the subsequent error they have been committing while putting it into action.I hope this puts things into perspective.

P.S: Read the comments after coming home..hence the late comment

Found this online, I think this is what Marwadi is trying to say. This is supposed to be from the horse's mouth.

"Literally speaking, ahimsa means non-violence. But to me it has much higher, infinitely higher meaning. It means that you may not offend anybody; you may not harbor uncharitable thought, even in connection with those who consider your enemies. To one who follows this doctrine, there are no enemies. A man who believes in the efficacy of this doctrine finds in the ultimate stage, when he is about to reach the goal, the whole world at his feet. If you express your love- Ahimsa-in such a manner that it impresses itself indelibly upon your so called enemy, he must return that love.

This doctrine tells us that we may guard the honor of those under our charge by delivering our own lives into the hands of the man who would commit the sacrilege. And that requires far greater courage than delivering of blows."

Turning the other cheek is the most courageous thing one can ever do in his entire life ... That’s not being oppressed ... but exactly the opposite ... because when someone is being oppressed that person is not in control while the oppressor is ... while in this case, by turning the other cheek you are the one in control ... u r the one dictating terms
