Keeping track of what latest developments occur in the cricketing world, it seems in most of the teams, news related to on field activities take up headlines rather than off field activities (except of course Zimbabwe).
Just seeing the latest controversy, it makes me wonder, even if we win the world cup in some future date, will we be the world champions in the real sense.
Are we professional enough ?
Was Sourav right in talking to the press about his conversation with the coach and the selection committee? And that too with a smirk in the face just because he scored 100 runs against a bad pace attack. Maybe the coach may have been right / wrong in saying Sourav to quit being a captain but has it been proper to bring such a conversation the fore and wash dirty linen in press. I dont think the rumor of the coach asking him to step down would have been generated just like that but more of a inside leak of the selection meeting.
Isnt captaincy to be conferred to the person, who is best suited for it, as he represents the National cricket team and the pride of the nation. Or is it a personal fiefdom where the prince's and kings rule the roost. What are they protecting the Nation's pride or their own pride?
How did the entire email from the coach to the BCCI president be leaked. As a committee are they not responsible enough to keep conversations to themselves private enough. Isnt it true that most of the denizens on the net keep there emails private without any leakage unless they would like it too?
What do the BCCI do after the receipt of the email --- Take an entire 4 days to come up with a solution .... Appoint a committee ... Isnt it beaureacratic enough ... If it represents the problems of the national team and if they are really grave as the Coach's email suggests ... then doesnt it need to be resolved at the earliest. Rather than having a committee to negotiate between both of them, let the coach be allowed to prove his contents from the email and Sourav be cross examined to determine whether it is the case or not. Punishment as are the rewards should be swift and decisive for either party.
It is not that I do not support my team. But I also want to be proud of my team. I want it to be professional enough. I want every player to play for the Nation's pride rather than their pride / egos. I want them to protect our pride rather than their kingdoms ...
Is it asking too much ! This is how I visualize my team to be and the captain should be a leader not a manipulator.

The committe was setup before this controversy erupted...and as i said before...i REITERATE...it was setup to analyze the bad performances after Greg was instilled...and it has been ONLY 2 series since.
The entire blog is ASKING convoluted questions...and sitting on the fence. In this controversy either ur with chappel or ganguly..there isnt any haggling about this.
U need to hear a FACT and then try to UNDERSTAND it.
I wrote the blog to throw up the questions. You are right in saying that I am sitting on the fence. But I cannot be at either one side coz unless the truth is crystal clear. I dont know whether the Coach is wrong or the captain, i cant support anyone of them.
Maybe, captain is good, but if there is a hint of what has happened is true than I cannot side with the captain. And so goes for the coach, if he just putting false allegations.
I am only with Team India side not indiciduals in this controvery.
History has proven India's disposition to take a soft stand on issues confronting the nation; be it negotiations with our "beloved" neighbor, be it terrorism in the valleys of Jammu & Kashmir, be it hijacking at Kandahar...and the list goes on. The same sentiment is applied in sports, especially cricket, and that has been the cause of our wavering performance levels on the international scene from time to time.
Unfortunately, the existence of a player in the Indian cricket team has not been a function of his fitness and performance and this very factor has led to our downfall. This is why players have taken it easy and not really dedicated efforts towards becoming a holistic cricketer and developing skills other than their individual specialities. To name a couple, we've got two of our star players - Venkatesh Prasad (ex-star player) and Kumble who have successfully exemplified this ethos. Prasad would often be seen whispering something to his fellow batsman after coming in to bat; if you're thinking he was discussing strategy, you are mistaken. I can bet my ass he was asking the other guy to give him a quick "How To Hold The Bat 101" on the pitch - at least that's what was evident from the way he batted every time with not even an iota of improvement observed throughout his career! Kumble's introduced the art of precision-diving into cricket all by himself and we can often see him demonstrate his technique of flying exactly OVER a running ball without even so much as touching a hair to it!
My point here is: Ganguly, with his aggression, flair and street-smartness indeed instilled a feeling of motivation and vigor into our side and the World Cup, the Australian and Pakistan tours are proof to this fact. Then started the downward spiral...after a hiatus of 6 months, we started playing as if we hadn't touched the red cherry in all that while. Almost everyone slacked but there weren't any measures taken to either reprimand the players or imbibe a sense of accountability for their actions.
Needless to say, this attitude has given our players a feeling of indispensability. Ganguly's no exception and I don't believe he's at fault here. This is all a result of BCCI's pampering and getting embroiled in bureaucracy and zonal politics. It's high time they crack the whip on someone who's not been performing regardless of his "stature" in the team.
I don't mean to say the board should be reckless and sack everyone left, right and center. By no means do I imply they lay off Kumble due to his fielding skills (or the lack of it) or something on those lines. They should maybe, devise a strategy to shuffle the team for a tour, give some players "a break" and plant a certain fear of substitutability if they don't "up the ante". This should be deployed especially in the case of a specialist player not delivering the goods in his area of expertise. Even in those days (once faaaar upon a time!) when Ganguly was in his batting prime, he seemed to think it's not his responsibility to run between the wickets or be agile on the field. He has not been performing as a batsman nor as an able captain ever since the Pakistan tour but people in higher echelons have turned a blind eye towards this fact so far.
The more backing he received from the powers to be, the more spoilt he got and his ego inflated all the more! His decision to openly talk to the media about the official coach's (well-deserved) comments on his game and attitude was unprofessional and very naive but more so, it was an indication of his sheer brazenness and haughtiness, both of which have been borne from and nurtured by his ego.
I won't blame Chappell even one bit in this drama. He is appointed the coach of an international side and he's going to try everything in his capacity to do a good job at it and that means weeding out the slag and keeping worthy players in the team. He's a tough-blood Australian and he's going to be professional about it without caring who he's commenting about 'cause at the end of the day, his ability as a coach is gonna be determined by how good his team is. He was careful in choosing the time to comment. He was our coach for the triangular in Lanka which gave him enough time to observe Ganguly and the team from close quarters so he isn't talking through the hat, they are all educated opinions and it really would be unfair to say his intentions are to create a rift in the team.
Digressing from the current topic of Cricket, I guess the only place where India showed a strong stand was during Terrorism in Punjab. No where else did I see that example. I maybe wrong.
To be honest, I expected an outburst from Greg Chappell before one from Ganguly. Apart from that however, without 'sitting on the fence', I think it is time that Ganguly made his departure from the indian cricket team.
When in flow, Ganguly did not need to run between wickets. His scoring rate was almost as good as the God opening in the one dayers with him and for a period even greater. It is his 'I don't give a F**k' that flooded the entire indian team and fans with self pride and a renewed passion. There is no one that will doubt that.
There is no doubt in my mind that there exists talent, especially young talent, that lies waiting in the wings to take Sourav's place. The job of motivation, of instilling self confidence in the team, (that Sourav has done so well in the past), is now Greg Chappell's job.
John Wright was quiet, resourceful and brilliant. Ganguly was loud, obnoxious and motivating. Greg Chappell is loud, proud and motivating. Dravid is modest, resourceful, and gritty. In my view, having both the captain and the coach (as they are now) is only going to hinder the team. Every team needs a change from time to time to help it move on.
But thats just my 2 cents.
