I got a mail from Kausum today which had a picture of a rekdiwaalah making tea somewhere in Bombay. That got me thinking as to why do we always have to feel nostalgic about anything related to Bombay or India. Pictures of a cutting chai waalah, Marine Drive, a BEST bus, local trains, a boy flying kite standing on a platform roof, anything and everything to do with Bombay/India ... why do they have to make us nostalgic and if they don’t then people make us believe there is something wrong with us, that we are unpatriotic, that we have become Americanized, in short ... we have lost it.
According to me this all-the-time nostalgia is not justified at all. 3 or how many ever years back we had 2 choices in front of us; either continue studying/working in India or come to the US for studying/working. We had 2 clear choices. We understood the consequences of picking each choice. And we chose to come over here for earning those American Dollars. And that’s what we are doing right now. Now if we think that we are missing so much by staying over here then we should move back. But no, we don’t want to move back also, we want to earn dollars.
In that case, we should get over this all-the-time nostalgia phase and accept the present as it is. We should learn to live in the present. We are in the US and that’s the present. India/Bombay is a thing of the past and maybe (hopefully ... definitely) of the future, but its certainly ain’t the present. We are losing precious present over a thing of the past; past which will always be there, past which cannot be changed.
Nostalgia is just glorified cribbing .... methinks.

I think all this nostalgia is just hypocritical. We like to think of ourselves as patriotic Indians missing our country very much; not being able to make the journey back due to unavoidable circumstances. We have to accept the truth, we dont go back because we dont want to. Everything else is a lie according to me.
I dont think nostalgia is such a bad thing as calling it 'glorified cribbing'. I've realised the worth of a good home made food after coming here, realised the genius of some Sachin's finest innings now when he is in bad form, ManU's finest moments as opposed their current struggle. If some things make one happy, bring a smile to your face...albeit a thing of the past, it isnt necessarily bad.
Nostalgia - They are the sweet memories of the past.
Do you mean to say - Just because we have made a decision in life, we should forget about our way of living we had earlier?
We should truly live the life as it is now, but suddenly when you see an event which you have been part of in the past, doesnt it rekindle your memories. I think that is part of being human and true for any person anywhere in the world.
There is absolutely no relation between patriotism and being nostalgic. Memories transcend borders and are personal to each individual.
Methinks, if we were to go back to India some day in the future, the time spent in the US would also be nostalgic to us. Maybe Goli can say that for sure. Does that make me Americanised ? I dont think so.
How is experiencing past events in your mind related to being patriotic or why is thinking about the past signifies that we are yearning for that?
Would you still get back your old life if you go back to India? Will the same people around as 3 yrs ago. Maybe the chaiwallah may also have changed. So if you think about the chaiwallah in India, Is it still hypocrisy or 'glorified cribbing' ?
I never said its not true for every human and true for every person in the world ... I never said I dont feel nostalgic anymore ... I just said that it beats me as to y do we have get nostalgic for every picture we come across ... I feel thats a bit too much ...
"Would you still get back your old life if you go back to India? Will the same people around as 3 yrs ago. Maybe the chaiwallah may also have changed. So if you think about the chaiwallah in India, Is it still hypocrisy or 'glorified cribbing' ?" -- this part was a total bouncer ... what are u trying to say here ...
Meant to say that ... thinking abt the past .. we think about our own memories having similar incidents not what we necessarily see. Seeing a photo or a person is just the starting point of going down the memory lane. WOuld we ever get over the "all-the-nostalgia" phase? Will we still not think about the chaiwallah when we see one on some particular day
If we feel nostalgic in India, when we see a chaiwallah are we still cribbing?
Yeah, nostalgia = glorified cribbing .... always, methinks.
I don't have anything against nostalgia, I just feel wasting present time and efforts over it aren't justified
Also in India we wont look at every other picture and feel nostalgic about it, because we have that very same thing around us.
The very fact that you have written this article shows that you haven't really forgotten the India that you love. The nostalgia is just a manifestation of your love for your own country. I don't think it's unpatriotic to NOT feel nostalgia, but then again, a little nostalgia never killed anyone in the first place. Nostalgia, per se, is not what is right or wrong, but the way we react to it may be. Suppressing your inner feelings is impossible, so giving in to your nostalgia every once in a while is a good exercise, I think. Otherwise, what is your identity? Who are you? Are you American or Indian? I firmly believe that I am still Indian at heart, no matter what I say or you think. It is important to differentiate between 'nostalgia' and 'patriotism', no doubt, but calling nostalgia worthless is in my opinion pointless because the very instant one says that, one has the nostalgic feeling anyway, no?
