Through the lens of a loser lesser sociologist

Furiously chugging away, on a Friday night, several delicious Smirnoff Oranges straight off rocks, Tool’s unique brand of psychedelic-metal playing on my laptop, I happened to be on our blog reading Sri's hilarious moment of frustration with MTNL and at the same time, recalled that he now has an offer from IBM India. So after writing a congratulatory note to him, my mind somehow, without the bearer's permission (you know how it is when you're down a few rapidly-consumed drinks), donned a pseudo-sociologist's robe and started pondering over the race of Indians, a race that's been copiously infiltrating the American soil since the 1960s.

It got a bit bolder and then decided to segregate the male desi population in America into 4 categories:
Category 1: Good old homegrown desis wishing to pursue Masters with average/above-average educational qualifications and many of them, with a resume that's as well-oiled as their scalp.
Category 2: The above category with a Masters diploma and 2-3 years of work-experience - the now-half-smartass, “ain’t nobody wiser than me”, complete-wannabe types.
Category 3: Thoroughbreds with a high-school (or equivalent) diploma and probably a dad with a very fat wallet, wanting to pursue undergraduate studies in the US, and
Category 4: Desis sown and grown in India, but only for a little while, who then migrated with their parents at age 9-10 or thereabouts, did pre-high school, high school, Bachelors, Masters (only if they didn't get a satisfactory dose of spanking inflicted by this education system) or a Ph.D (only if they had serious mental issues or an unfathomable love to be in school for that length in time)

For a quick second then, in that blissfully alcoholic state, my mind paused, much like the way my tongue does before it jets out a river of thoughts not before having translated them into stuttering sentences, and I could hear it say "How could I miss one of the most interesting categories? – The ABCDs!!"

Either you r the second Freaks-own-Kubrick (the first being me...branded a while back by vcd) or it was the notorious quart of vodka that did the trick! Nevertheless EXCEPTIONAL blog...one of the b est written here on Freaks. My view on the whole ABCD issue is very similar...but talking from a Category 2's perspective, I think we are ourselves are Confused as to how we need to behave with them...a slight twinge in accent...with rolling of the R's and streching the A's or just be your normal self and make them delve into your persona. In the end its a fox-and-the-sour-grapes story...Chodd yaar apne 'type' ki nahin hai.
In any case going by ur reaction to ABCDs, looks like the man has gone 'wankers' many a times thinking about them :-). Side-stepping a lill bit - which pseudo-socio category does Shudrakant fall under (Bhaiyya already has him in the lowest rung of human social habitat).
A long post like this deserves a long comment...brilliantly written.

Could have finished reading LOTR in this much time ... if there was an oscar for longest blog you would have the killed the competition :-)

On a serious note ... really nice blog ... as for the last note ... do we really need a rush of adrenaline ... can a nation be built on such rushes ... I feel we need more sustained efforts from dedicated individuals ... individuals who believe the nation can become great ... all we need is a bit more self-belief ...

Sorry if I have misinterpreted your point in any way ...

Also, my 3 pegs for the night are done ... Alcoholics Anonymous here I come ...

LOL! - to that comment on when you started reading it and when you got done reading it.

VCD, you got it spot on. I basically intended to write about diffidence, indisposition to grab initiative and indifference I observe in the Indian youth, myself included, and the blatant superficiality entrenched in our society that irritates and frustrates me to no end. And then I decided to package all of that stuff in an envelope of yet another frustration - not being able to lay one of my fine brown sistas ;)

Anyway I'm glad you guys liked my rambling. Thx.

Unabashed, no-holds-barred blog! It's a very nice commentary on how cultural influences change people (or the other way round). Liked this one immensely. Looking forward to more such from you, Yatin.

I read this blog and it sure did take me a lot of time to read. Brilliantly written especially the way geometry is juxtaposed with sociology. I did not want to comment in protest because I wanted an ammendment to the section header for "Category 2". I believe I fall under category 2 and I would like you to change the category description not to include with a Master's Diploma. I guess Mike ( my samadukkhi ) alter ego in this regard would whole-heartedly agree !
