Firstly , Happy Independence Day to all of you fellas.
Me and Vishal were talking about this and we thought we will post this question to each one of you.
What does Independence day mean to you ?
Here is what we thought it meant to us -
Every Independence Day, I think of the hundred and thousands who participated in the most unique freedom struggle on the history of earth, and I feel extremely proud of myself for being a part of that great nation. But then I think of how much do I really understand of being a slave. I guess none. Freedom was served to me on a silver plate and I have and probably never will truly realize the value of it.
I am afraid that I think about these things only I-day and then I feel scared that I am becoming what I have always feared to be- Just another soul busy in the mundane routines , one who is more interested in his monthly paycheck than anything else around him. I am scared that my only touch with my country is now limited to a bullshit newspaper (hell, I shouldnt even call it that) called TimesOfIndia which serves me nothing but crappy tabloidism. I am scared that another 3-4 years and I may even cease to feel as much as I do now.

"The true value of independence can only be measured by people who have seen both sides of it ... people who have lived in British-ruled India and free India ... people who have given their sweat, tears, blood and a lot more towards the fight for independence ... Its hard for our generation to really grasp what it means like to be slaves ... to be under a foreign body's rule ... free air can be valued only by someone who has been in a cage long enough.
Independence Day fills me with pride each and every time ... proud that I am an Indian ... it gives me goose bumps just thinking about the freedom struggle and what sacrifices people must have made so that I could see this day. But the problem is I experience these feelings only on I-day and not on each and every day throughout the year. Don't get me wrong, doesn't mean I rebuke India or dont feel proud that I am an Indian on the other days, just that those (very essential) goose bumps are not there.
If only Independence Day meant more than just a holiday to me India would have been a much better place."

Independence day is just another day of the week for me. Its primarily because of the fact that ive never been on the 'other side'. BUT it doesnt require a 15th August to give me goose pimples or feel proud about my motherland. Time to time an Indian victory in sport or film/documentary about India does give me the goose. Also I donot see any connection in being mundane/earning a fat pay cheque with losing any of your nationalistic fervour. They are quite mutually exclusive and you cannot point out that a proud Indian cannot/shouldnot earn high. I am of the school of thought that you dont require a 14th of Feb to Love...in the same veins u dont need 15th of August to suddenly develop love for ur motherland.

For me Independence day is definitely a special day. Its more than just a holiday like the other Hallmark holidays(are) viz. Valentine's day,Mother's day etc. Singing the national anthem on Independence day with a huge crowd of people gives me more goose bumps than singing it on any other day.I get nostalgic about my school days when we used to run to the school for our parade and flag hoisting ceremony. More so after 8th standard when I got to wear those scout badges and participate in the 'march-past'.It is one day on which I dont crib an iota about getting up early at 6am in the morning. I love to see the tricolor unfurl atop the Red Fort at 7am and its the only day on which I find the Prime Minister's address to the nation more awe inspiring than monotonous. I am also excited about the display of aircrafts, tanks and artillery of the armed forces which happens only on Independence/Republic day.So put things in perspective I end with an analogy. I agree that we should ooze patriotism and wish well about our country everyday of the year, but it is impossible to keep the same sprit and intensity. The importance of Independence day is to rekindle that spirit whilst remembering the countless sacrifices made by the people of yore.Heres to 58 years of independence

It is not a special day in the year for me. I can never truly say that I know what gaining independence is about. I have always taken my freedom for granted, and be it unfortunate, I probably will until something happens that will change that.
On a side note; There was this uncle in our area in bombay who was a good friend of my dad (more like uncle really). He used to chat with my dad all the time and tell him about how it was in the old days, and many a time when I used to be around, he (Satolekar uncle) invited me to join them. I never did really, and now that I think about it, I probably should have, then I would have been able to answer this question better.
