Now what did he do wrong?

Dada has been dropped from the squad for the 3rd Test. I seriously dont get this circus that they are playing around with Ganguly's career. He has been in terrible form over a past year or so and I totally supported the fact that he needed to be dropped, get back to the roots and score heavily in domestic cricket. This is how events unfolded:

1. First the news comes out from the selectors (More particularly) that Ganguly is included in the test team as an all-rounder.

2. Ganguly doesnot even bowl 5 overs in test 1 and 2 combined

3. He makes a dodgy and important 39 and 40 in the second test.

4. Dravid says :"He played very well in both innings". But the selectors decided to drop him.

5. Aha...the selectors. The newly appointed guys...still groping to find their feet under the media flashbulbs. After Sharad Pawar was appointed the BCCI president, the first task that was carried out was to oust the 3 selectors who had vociferously backed Ganguly's inclusion. Three new puppets were instated and now Dada is out.

6. Coming to the question of his performance in the 2nd test, I thought he looked really solid. He fought it out in a good partnership with Sachin in the first and Yuvi in the 2nd. And since he was dropped solely based on the performance of the 2nd test explain Gambhir's inclusion to me.

7. And who does replace him??? Wasim Jaffer....Wasim who?? Doesnt matter folks as far as Mr. Sharad and company are concerned he is from Mumbai...and thats the ticket to get in.

It just seems that the bunch of fools led by a corrput politician and a big-mouthed stumper are out there just to strike out Ganguly and a glorious chapter off Indian cricket's reams. As my friends from Lock Stock would put it..."Its lame, Its a pain, Its SHAME of the fuckin' century"

all are valid points (except maybe the jaffer one ... the bloke has performing admirably on the domestic circuit) ... they shouldn't have included gangs in the first place ... he has been given enough opportunities ...

i dont agree on the jaffer point either but ganguly did not deserve to be dropped after this performance, that i totally agree with. after a long time did he really look comfortable at the crease.

As far as my knowledge of Wasim Jaffer goes for this season, he has come down at No.3 and No.4 where he has preformed so consistently. And why not a guy like Robin Uthapa who has also performed well in recent yrs. Where did Dheeraj Jadhav go after being selected for the Zim tour and then dropped w/o playing a match? Was his face fucked up?

And well to re-iterate my point: It doesnt matter if Ganguly should have been in the squad or not in the first place. Now that he was instated...HE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DROPPED ON THIS PERFORMANCE...its despicable, disgraceful and derogatory to a fair selection criterion.

as far as my knowledge of Wasim Jaffer goes for this season, he has come down at No.3 and No.4 where he has preformed so consistently. -- this statement is not entirely correct. jaffer has opened in 3 matches for bombay where he averages 89, (with a century and another 50). and he has played at 3/4 for west zone and averages 65 there. i am not defending the selectors decision of dropping ganguly, but lets not start the zonal card, cause dheeraj jadhav also belongs to the same zone afaik.

I was expecting this..I was telling my dad when Gangs and Yuvraj were at the crease that for one this would be a career saving innings and for one it would be a career making one. My words brought to reality.
Wasim Jaffer has been performing consistently for Mumbai for a while and deserved a look in..but neither at the expense of Ganguly nor at the expense of Gambhir..either ways it is unfair!

Both Gambhir and Jaffer cannot play the new ball in the first session of Test. However, I feel Jaffer has a wide range of shots more than Gambhir. Gambhir has failed a zillion times plus his scores are less than Jaffer in domestic cricket. I think Gambhir should have been dropped anyways ...

(1) Ganguly did not deserve to be dropped after the second test.

(2) Wasim Jaffer probably deserves a look in, but not at the expense of Ganguly now for the third test, and definitely not against Pakistan (in Pakistan).

(3) Gambhir has played 12 tests at an average of 37. Jaffer has played 7 at an average of 20. Gambhir has a flaw in his batting but deserves to be allowed to correct it.

(4) The statement issued was "Why keep Ganguly in the team if you are not going to play him". Something tells me that Jaffer probably will not get to play the third test.

(5) Lets say that Ganguly was not going to play the third test, what is Kaif, substitute fielder?

Conclusion: I agree with ball's initial comment about this being more about politics than about cricket. Any of us that saw that third test match saw the drastic difference in Ganguly's batting.

Biggest Regret: Someone like Ganguly who has done so much for indian cricket did not deserve to be treated like this.

Whole heartedly agree with you Srikant...totally replicated my sentiments word to word by this statement "Someone like Ganguly who has done so much for indian cricket did not deserve to be treated like this". Im am and would always remain a true fan of Ganguly despite the ridicule and shit that is he has to face.
Also I totally disagree with KK, no way should Jaffer be given a chance above Gambhir. This is his first and only series failure. He has a good technique and is def one for the future.
And the reason why im not in favour of Jaffer is coz he has been given a chance not once but twice and failed both times. Why not give Robin Uthappa a chance or maybe Ravneet Ricky...both are playing well and pretty young too... and a debut in India against SL wud definitely be easier than a debut in Pak. Dada u deserved better.

Another thing to remember is that the problem that Gambhir has with his batting is that he brings his front foot forward too quickly. The only reason that this has given him problems in this series is because BOTH pitches have been low bouncing ones. On a pitch that is normal, no one will notice that mistake. Ricky Ponting also has that problem. Ahmedabad has a belter of a pitch normally, and I really do not see that problem coming into effect there. I just hope that they play Gambhir and not Jaffer.

"Someone like Ganguly who has done so much for indian cricket did not deserve to be treated like this" -- this according to me is a very weak argument. sentiments should play no part in trying to make a decision regarding somebody inclusion in the team. now does he deserve to be in the team on merit of his performance is another question we should be answering.

Marwadi I regret that you have NOT read the comment that I made. This was entitled BIGGEST REGRET. I never said that this was the core of the argument that I was making. If you read the entire comment then you would have noticed that I had five points that I stated before I said what you are referring to.

i did not say that u were making a wrong argument or it was the core .. i am just saying that whoever makes that argument (and i have heard a lot of ppl make that argument) is a weak one acc to me. all i am saying is what he has done shd have no bearing ..

Marw ur not TERRBILY intelligent are you??
Dada....some ppl will never learn...esp Gujjus and marwadis!

I think too much is being said about Gangs exclusion. The truth is he had to go..sooner better than later. The way he was treated, the politics going on and the emotional fervour shown by all will have absolutely no bearing once the Indian team continues performing well and keeps winning. All the protests and the ill feelings will bite the dust and in a short while it will be a thing of the past.
Just a comparision:
Mark Waugh was also not given a golden handshake as such. He was just dropped and when he found it difficult to make it back the team, he retired. Nobody said a thing because..hey its Australia..they are the best they know what they are doing. Why cant we react similarly here? If the performances over the past two years are any indication, Gangs didnt deserve a place in the side on pure merit even for the second test. I will maintain that he performed reasonably well( in the second test) but nothing to drive home about. Yuvraj outscored him at a crucial juncture and hence retained his place. Ganguly doesnt open the innings so replacing Gambhir with Ganguly was out of the question. We needed a backup opener for the Pak series in case someone gets sick or injured..so in came Jaffer with his third chance. There is no place for sentiments here at all..it should be ruthless.Unnecessary sentiments and emotions just makes that hypocrite tag look more prominent.

Totally agree with Aup.

1. Dada was selected in the team for the 2nd Test as Sehewag was injured. However, scoring the way Dada did in the domestic circuit doesnt automatically qualify him for the position. Other cricketers have performed similarly.

2. Dada doesnt open in Tests and we surely miss an extra opener. Maybe Irfan played a knock of 93 but he is yet to be tested in seaming conditions with new ball bowlers of the likes of Mcgrath. We need to groom an opener.

3. Dada bats at number 6. Infact Kaif and Yuvraj both are options for that position. and both can be sit as reserves in tour. If Pathan actually becomes an allrounder in the true sense then we can also include Zaheer or another bowler.

4.Jaffer is being included just to fill as a reserve opener and neither Dravid or Pathan need to take the place of the opener as happened in the 2nd Test.

5. True Dada has a lot of experience, but if we do not give the new ones a chance how would they learn. Maybe Jaffer being included maybe right or not, but we do need a reserve opener in the team. And we have the likes of Dravid and God himself for the opposition to be in awe.

6. If dada has to be kept in the team then Kaif has to be removed coz he serves no purpose in the lineup. Keeping next 2 years in mind, kaif would be lot more preferable.
