This is what a friend of mine Ruchir Dalal wrote to me abt the whole Rahul Sachin 194 issue.....beautifully put.....

The world is divided into Sachin fans who do anything to defend him, and Sachin critics, who do anything to criticize him.
At times when statistics are discussed and critics have a field day with quotes like :

"Never performs when India needs him".
"Chokes in big matches".
"Record in India better than record abroad".
"Big scores always in dead matches".
"Low averages or numCenturies against X team".

In an era of Americanized statistifying, there will be a statistic on how many balls it took for Sachin to get from 100 to 138, in matches played in December
when Dave Shepherd was umpiring. A statistic like "all Sachin's double hundreds have been in drawn matches" can be quite damning.

That is why Sachin fans want a Sachin double hundred. (probably more than he wants it, since he doesnt have to defend himself using statistics, unlike his
fans).

So if India go on to win this match, I would have liked a watch him get those 6 runs. Sure it doesnt matter to him, but I guess it matters to me. We play
testmatches in Pak every 10-15 years. Probably 2-3 times in a long career. Long after those who actually watched the match are dead, it is only cold numbers
which will speak.

And dont get me wrong here, because I completely agree with the thing that its Dravid's decision. God knows, he has been stranded in the 90s enough number of
times when Ganguly has declared. And there's no end to this milestone business. But given the circs of the match, I think we could have afforded to delay
declaration by 2 overs. But like Sachin said, once the decision is taken, thats it.

The worst fallout of this is that the media (and some hyper Sachin fans) are going to get after Dravid's blood. And he might get bitter by that experience.
Which is sad, since he's a fine cricketer and gentleman. Hope he is unaffected by what follows.

P.S. here is Razzaq's reaction after Akash took a stunner to get him.....awesome....another for the archives!!!!!

Read This article on Cricinfo, brilliantly written, especially this quote --

As Henry Longfellow wrote, Not in the clamor of the crowded street, Not in the shouts and plaudits of the throng, But in ourselves, are triumph and defeat .

The old workhorse Clums has done it again.

My views about the present hot topic in cricket. Should Sachin have been allowed to score a double?
Well, definitely. He deserved it since he played an impeccable knock mixing caution with agression ( cliched ). He knew that the declaration was to come at any time and was aptly accelerating .It was just a matter of an over or two before he got his double. But I agree that he should not have said in the press that he was surprised by the declaration, since he couldnt have done anything about it anyways. But its a common practice nowadays to interview the player on the ground itself before he comes back to the pavilion and this might just have triggered the most unlikely event of the Little Master opening up to the press. Dravid definitely erred in not allowing Sachin to complete his double, but Sachin erred too.
Pakistanis are bad losers and definitely the treacherous and cranky Miandad is trying his best to play mind games by fueling the discussion that he would have allowed Sachin to score a double, had he (sachin) been in his (miandad's) team. The reason given by him is that Sachin wins so many matches for India that he deserved the double. Mind you, this is the same Miandad who blabbered after the Rawalpindi one-dayer that Sachin is good, but he still has to win many matches for India.Opinions change so soon!! Imran Khan had made a hue and cry about India getting Ashish Nehra at the last minute in the Pindi one-dayer. Imran had accused India of playing mind games. But Mr Imran , your team is doing the same, playing mind games and this is definitely in the worst possible taste. Now, where are you, have you gone deaf ?
Mid-day, the perfect tabloid had published that there was an animated discussion between Ganguly and Dravid which ended with the former walking out and then Dravid declared. Mid-day is of the opinion that Ganguly had a say in the declaration and he is jealous of Sachin and blah blah blah. I think people are really misguided by the press ( that includes yours truly ) and we believe that there is a fair degree of truth in print. Dravid is jealous of Tendulkar and the adulation he (Sachin) gets ,was another ridiculous comment in the Mid-day. But I would say that these are all the contemplations of the cheap and crooked mind and we ( the people ) would be better placed casting this inconsequential incident in the limbo of oblivion. All the best India !!
One Fabulous picture of Sachin, thought we should archive it...

Ok all said and done in Jammu......this is wat my dad said happened in Bbay.....

1. No Rickshaws on Taxis plying on the road....a few those were, had tuned into the match via radio (on 'ispecial' patented Jhankar beats 'Shystam').

2. Dad was in the temple during the paki batting. Ladies were reading 'Vishnu Sahastranamam' (with Navratri goin on....). When news seeped in abt the fall of a paki wkt.....there wud be a huge roar for a few secs (much to the dismay of all the 'Wadhiyaars'(read priests....dad included!!!)) and then 'Vishnu Sahastranamam' wud start again.
For whom the bell tolls..................

3. Every man with earplugs on is asked "Boss..... score kya hua??" (Doesnt matter if he is listening to Sushil Doshi's commentary or Altaf's 'Rum Vodka Tharra beeer')

4. Maximum number of patrons outside an Electronics shop! (Chai/Panwalas have their own share of celebrity status too)

5. Not to mention the fireworks.......it happens in Bbay even if we ROI in a drab Irani trophy match. But this victory had to special.....the fireworks went on till wee hours of the morning culminating with a '15 Min Maala'!!!!!!!

24th March my friends......forget ur Bday but this day......at ur own peril!
Bring on the Tests suckers.

Pakistan grieve, India exult - The Times of India

Have a look at what Shoaib Akhtar did after the match. In that the best part is what his team-mate says: "More than the loss he was stunned by the six that L Balaji hit off him."

Balaji Rox ! Totally !!!

An excerpt from cricinfo:

"While Rahul Dravid and Mohammad Kaif were building a partnership during the fourth one-dayer, superstitions were rampant in the Indian dressing room. The Indian Express found out that VVS Laxman could not leave his seat till the game was over, while Yuvraj Singh was ordered to stay horizontal on the massage table until the game was sealed. Amrit Mathur, the media manager, was persona non grata in the dressing room while the match went on, because of the belief that a wicket would fall if he were around"

Bala, looks like we are not alone !!!

I fear for the Congress

Dont agree with all of the views but definitely some of the things are thought provoking.
The Hindu : Redefining secularism -- Found a link to a article from the link anoop sent on Khem Singh. A very nice article on definitions and origins of "Secularism" as taught to us.

The fact that secularism as preached to everyone by the Congress just means appeasing the minorities and it has in fact fuelled religious fanaticism.

Yeah Anadi is right.I think people are making too much fuss over good-will and will be hurt when reality dawns. Every Indian still wants India to thrash Pakistan in cricket or in any other sporting encounter. Thats the reason why I whole-heartedly agree to Saif Ali Khan's words in his article about Indo-Pak cricket series in the Times." Its not about winning..its about ripping them ( Pakis ) apart".
A totally different issue to which I would like to divert the groups attention about racism in general and discrimination against Indians. Check out this article on rediff, its shocking The article
Arsenal Sucks!

Real is worse!!

To hate Man City is to live for!!!

A new addition to Freaks, Suraj Amonkar. I hope he starts blogging atleast once a week and is not a passive reader. Bala I think I could say that we respect your decision not to watch the match if it helps India winning, even if it means restricting you from viewing the match.(Kidding). I think yesterdays chase would have been equally exciting for you as the Pindi chase, but I agree with the fact that you would have suffered fewer nervous wrecks since there was clinical Rahul rather than flamboyant Sachin during yesterdays chase. Also, a thought about that "reporter asking Rahul/ Inzy separately whether the match was fixed " issue. Though Rahul and Inzy had every right to blow up, I think they should have tackled it diplomatically rather than asking him to shut up or get out of the room. Time and again cricketers are bound to be asked such uncomfortable dodgy questions, especially since there has been a match fixing cloud in the very recent past and cricket is still to steer clear of it. I think that a more prudent handling of the question would have been to explain to the reporter that though it is the popular misconception that the Indo-Pak one dayers are fixed, the assumptions / allegations are untrue. The reporter needed to be explained that by suspecting that the match was fixed he was doubting the integrity of people like SRT and Rahul who have given their blood and sweat for Indian cricket. If everything is back to the non-match fixing rosy days, then what was the reason to lose temper on an inconsequential person who was asking this question just to add some spice to his daily's headline. Rahul eventually did explain( to the press) that such questions bring disrepute to the game, but I think those should have been his first words rather than " Somebody take this guy out of the room " . About Inzy's "shut up" comment , the less said the better.
Another weekend spent in dribs and drabs and of foolish 'Superstitions' and unrestrained joy.

Many called me foolish, imprudent, and overtly superstitious on my decision to avoid seeing the 4th ODI.
But i care two hoots....as i repeated time and again 'I wud rather rue my decision of not watching it than see India lose'.
A quick bgrnd on this....India lost both the matches I watched....so.....better not watch this un i thought :-)
All's well that ends well as Shakspeare said.....we conqured Lahore with the class of Rahul and the panache of our future captain Kaif. Looking down at the barrel after our famed batting attack was blown to smithereens by the much hyped '3 S's' (albeit Shabbir was shown his aukaad today) Dravid as he so often does......kept his cool along with the young brigade and guided us to safety.I forsee Kaif taking on Rahul's role for much part his career. Kaif has shown maturity much beyond his years in his fledgling career so far. His batting has been a revelation this series and his fielding...well he has just enhanced his reputation in world cricket as one of the best.

Let me be a little audacious here in saying that I've got 'used to' Dravid playing such innings much the same way as the flamboyance of Sachin of Old. How I wish i cud meet some of those guys with whom we saw the WC who cussed at Dravid all the time.....wats the point....some ppl wud never learn. But to me Rahul remains our most important player in recent times in ODIs ....dont think i need to reiterate his importance in tests. Taking over the Wking mantle for our team without uttering a word....carrying on the responsibilties of a deputy and most importantly as the lynchpin of our batting lineup, he has taken giant strides only in one direction.......GOD.

Lynchpin becoz he is surrounded by all strokemakers and his stoic presence, an iron will and the ability to 'GRIND' the opposition out of the game ensures that thores of ppl like urs truly dont suffer frequent nervous wrecks. One flaw that I wud want Dravid to work on is his tendancy to sweep the spinner out of the attack. He is too classy to rely on that shot for the sake of a single.....Richards never played it....and I believe that Dravid has a much better technique than the 'Maan'. Im too small a person to suggest changes to GOD's batting......his every drop of sweat and blood is worth its weight in gold.

So lets raise a toast Gentlemen ...... 'To Rahul, Kaif and to a 3-2 romp!'

A proud Indian

Another Gaurav Sabnis blog

A few thoughts about the ongoing series -

- Sami and Shoaib are two amazing bowlers. This is the first time I have properly observed Shoaib in about 3 years and I can confidently say that he is miles ahead of the other fast bowlers in world cricket. The closest competition is Sami. Lee is not even in the same league. He just lacks the range. What Sami and Shoaib need is a good bowling coach who will help cut out their errors.

- Ashish Nehra's split webbing is, in my opinion a blessing in disguise. A bowler as prone to breakdowns as him, better take a break now, during the pyjama phase of the series. That way he will be fit for the more important test series.

- This is an ODI series after all. It can only get exciting up to a certain point. It lacks the more glorious uncertainties of test cricket. Which is why this TEN Sports wrangle hurts me so much. It means I am missing out on the more lip-smacking prospect of Sri Lanka and Australia battling in the test arena. Every day as I read of a dramatic day's play from the Island, I curse Bukhatir. It has been ages since I have seen Warne bowl. Waaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!! :(

- Yasir Hamid is a decent bat. His innings, according to me, was more responsible for the 329 rather than Afridi's.

- Tendulkar still can't finish ODI matches.

- In places like Australia, New Zealand, South Africa etc, a middle order that features both Laxman and Dravid seems formidable. However on the absolutely flat 300-plus-everyday subcontinent tracks, they are going to act as dead weight. 60 off 70 balls is a brilliant knock overseas. But here, it means that 10 balls were wasted. And more often than not, that is what makes the difference. Even if someone does waste those balls, there should be someone who makes up for them. So if a Laxman wastes those balls, Sehwag or Yuvraj should make up. The way Afridi made up. But yesterday, we lost the match because of Ganguly's 15 off 38. The 23 balls wasted were not compensated since Sehwag and Yuvraj did not click.

- When every 300-plus chase gets close, it stops becoming interesting. 2 matches into the series and I am already bored. "Team X chase/almost chase 300 plus". Ho hum, so what's new?

- Powar is a promising bloke. Balaji's cool head more than makes up for his limited talents.

- Zaheer is obviously not a 100%. Why is he playing pyjama cricket? Send him home, and call him back for the test series. No one remembers who wins one day series. It is the tests that matter. Even now, no one is talking about how Australia whipped us in the one day series. They are talking about how we gave them a hiding in the tests.

- Miandad is a funny guy. :)

- This Indian team has fighting spirit. Despite what happened eysterday, they are not chokers.

An APT reply in the comments page by somebody called Ramanand

How can SRT finish matches given:

a. he had no real support from the others
b. he was tiring, having played 40+ overs
c. he had to try and bridge the 16 to 18 run to ball deficit himself
d. His lofted shots were coming off, except for the last one.

Finishers usually are from the middle order, not openers, esp. not in 300+ chases.

The rest of the points: couldn't agree more.

I hate these stupid pitches: they'd better have bowling m/cs and get the batters to have a whack. And it's a shame we can't see Warne-Murali & Eng v WI.
Real shame. Damn the overhyped ODI series.

Kudos to Bala on a very "thought over" blog which encaptured just about every thought and emotion a passionate Indian cricket fan has gone through in the past few days. The atmosphere while watching the match today was such that it would be an understatement if to call it Electric. It had it all; frantic prayers, the very common " You sit on the couch, Sachin hits a four", " Bala, pls dont smoke; when you smoke a wicket falls" , the "expletive a sentence " one liners et al . I completely agree with Bala that watching the match at Andy ( Anirudha's ) place with the girls was a relevation. For once watching the match was a no-nonsense affair with just unbriddled passion for the game. At least , we didnt have to endure the ignominy of our fellow Indians ridiculing the game-style of greats( read Gods) like Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. Sanity was restored into the proceedings with the presence of genuine cricket fans who had a knowledge of the game, were rational in their expectations and more importantly, tolerant; unlike jerks we have come across who want every ball to be hit for a six or a four, who regard a person hitting 110/130 balls slow and want him dropped and whose absolutely minimal or almost non existing "grey cells" make it hard for them to fathom that Rahul Dravid is a boon for the team. Being a person who does not get easily excited while watching close finishes in cricket( that does not in any way reduce my passion for the game), I was moved by people like Bala, Vishal and the girls Uttara, Poorva and Aarti who openly expressed their unstoppable excitement , were really tensed that they almost seemed short of breath while watching the game. I really started feeling the heat when Balaji and Powar were putting up that last but most spirited fight that I needed a few deep breaths to regain my composure. Though, we lost todays match by coming agonisingly close to the Paki total, we can clearly say that the "Never say die" attitude instilled into the boys by John Wright and Sourav Ganguly has metamorphised this unit into an extremely professional one. Finally the real low of the day was an absolutely idiotic , non-patriotic, treacherous, and ridiculous comment got as an SMS on Balajis cell phone from his friend. It said " Balaji..my condolences for India getting sodomised in the match". Though Balaji immediately called and blasted him with expletives , I would like to give my comment on this. The person has disgraced his mother's womb!
My guess would be Salvi (Glenn Mcgrath :-)).
Also somebody's forgotten to speak bt LION HEARTED Laxmipathy Balaji. The galis we have hurled at the guy during the 2 tests against NZ still resound in my ears. After watching (i mean following him online and reports from undisclosed sources who had the pleasure to watch the game) him bat and his brilliant delivery the earlier game to get Yasir Hameed, we have to give it to him. Also we need to appreciate Chandi and Wrights persistence of youngsters which I think is a big reason for us being the team we are.

Need I say something bt SRT's innings. That would make up another blog just by itself. It is aptly described by Anoops nickname on MSN.
"SRTs Divinity Redeemed" , the sad part that he has to do the same time and again and still it wouldnt be enough for ppl in India.
Been a while since i wrote on this.....a lot of flak, grappling the Blog funda and some overtly poor posts on this has prompted me to write. So here we go......

So wat do I write abt.....Cricket....well thats too common and aint 'grey cell' tickling material for a start atleast. Same applies to Metallica or Iron Maiden or Amitabh or for that matter even Altaf!! So wat does all these have in common...(apart from all of em having dicks).....see the other facet of it....the fanaticism, the craving for ur idols and the undying adulations. Yeah the fulcrum of being a freak...a fanatic .... a mad 'FAN'.

Ever wondered y we get up at wee hours in the morning for a cricket match (having to bear the idiosyncracies of dumbwitted 'so called cricket fans') or bunk classes to see a soccer match or have this blogger set up??? Who the fuck cares..... eat sleep breathe 'sex'..... ooopps sorry sport. Imagine life w/o our constant bickering and squabbles of who scored the first golden goal or whether Maninder or Raju got hit more times in the 'box' or talk abt how handsome 'Klums' is in real life. Boy wud life suck or wat.....

Take for example the WC scenario.....a lot of things flash thru my mind as i write this.....as to how ppl wud urge me to go and have a smoke if a wkt did not fall (AND THE MAN GRACIOUSLY AGREED .... A SACRIFICE IM EVER READY TO DO FOR MY COUNTRY). A sometimes it did work......( actually i used to quickly call up Wasim bhai to seek his blessings!!).

Day2....(of writing a blog...boy am i slow or wat)....
Scene: Indo Pak ODI 2......
Venue: Andy's place....
Was always circumspect on watching the match at a place with 3-4 gals.....dunno how they wud react to our technical mumbo-jumbos (culminating with galis
galore and a few blows too perhaps). But to my surprise and relief ...they were far far better than the ppl whom we watched the WC with. Cheering every run...praying...superstition is wat u associate with us 'freaks'.... but boy was it a breathe of fresh air to see the gals follow the bent grass or wat!
Kudos to Uttara, Aarthi and poorva for showing the passion and love for the game.
The match itself....well wat to say abt it.....fabulous entertaintment (inspite of the gotex moomex syndrome)Powar a real find......said the same thing years ago abt Badani and Ritinder Sodhi too.....absolute damb squibs both. But hope im proved wrong...the talent in the man is there to see and the 'jigar' is refreshing... Robin anyone??

So with the cricket series balanced beautifully....the EPL almost settled and the Champs setup nice and interesting....things are gonna be fun for the rest of the spring. And waddya have for the summer...yeaaaaahhhh the Euro Cup....thats gonna be the bomb man!
So keep the blogs rollin guys and i promise...ill be in there....active as ever.

Time for a nap.......(guess u had had ur share by the time u reached the end of this dim-witted blog)
Balls

P.S. Any takers on who is gonna be Nehra's replacement....my guess is Bhandari...the boy fared strictly OK in Australia.

Anoop forgets to mention the other tied match where I took final wicket to save the game. Also he forgot bt the fab mango lassi and great Indian food at ISKCON temple.
Of Gujjus and Marvadis and fierce competitiveness:
Yesterday, we had a nice session of cricket at my place in Mount Ridge. We play a game of four overs, with typical 'feki' bowling and anything which hits the walls directly is out ( BOX STYLE ). We ( Jeetu, Suraj and I ) have been playing this sort of cricket everyday at our house since our return from India and it is a cool game which we enjoy a lot. But yesterday a totally new perspective was added to our cricket..the competitive edge. Vishal and Anubhav, at my place after a visit to the Isckon temple, made me realise what happens when a Gujju and a Marvadi play..there was everything SLEDGING, CHEATING, and fierce competitiveness. The one incident which still resounds in my minds is the game in which Anubhav and I were in one team and Vishal and Jeetu formed another. A confusion about the target we were supposed to chase arised and we had a smallish squabble whether it was 31 or 32(runs).
Anoop: "Abbe..kitna run chahiye jeetne ko"
Jeetu and Vishal: 33 runs ..hum logon ne 32 banaya tha
Anubhav and Anoop : Haan kya? hum logon ko laga 32 hai jeetne ko
Vishal ( turning his head to Anubhav) : 33 yaar....Apna Baat ho gaya tha

"Apna Baat Ho gaya tha" ..What on earth could justify his statement other than a case of serious 'sattebaazi' match fixing instincts.

We battled for matches and matches galore..first Vishal and I teaming up against Anubahv and Jeetu and then Anubhav and I teaming up against the other two."5-1" was the scoreline in our favour in the first and the series was tied "1-1" in the second, which included a well fought two tied matches. In one of the tied matches, Anubhav finally chose his occasion to showcase his talent allowing Jeetu to score 27 runs in one over of his bowling as I was the fielder happlessly seeing the opposite team equalise the target with a last ball four of my bowling. After they ( Vishal and Anubhav ) left, Jeetu and I had a discussion about how gruelling the cricket session was; how tired we felt after 11 games of four overs each which we have never even felt after 20 games in our normal routine. We discussed how the everyday cricket games we played was a gentleman's affair with a high level of tolerance and zero argument kind of like the English cricket. And now introduce a Gujju (Vishal) and a Marvadi( Anubhav); the game changes to a fierce Indo-Pak style cricket with lot of abuses, arguments, sledging, and close finishes.

Anoop forgot to mention bt the lane we found in Downtown with all the Strip Bars.(Certainly GOLI's paradise) Anoop even remembers their names. That was probably the high point of the evening. Also Pizza at California Pizza Kitchen was fantastic, especially the Pizza Bread. For the first time in life, an experiment in a new food joint came good.

Thats all bt the Mixer, geting ready for the MOSH PIT. Any takers ?

:-)

I hope losing the first match and that too against an A side augurs well for India, like it did in the World Cup. But I think the main cause of concern was the number of wides and no balls which continue to be the bane of our bowlers.Zaheer went for 77 in his 9 but 27 of those came in extras. Lion Hearted Balaji and our much talked about hope Irfan did nothing either.I think the line up for one dayers should go like this Sachin, Sehwag, Laxman, Ganguly, Dravid, Yuvraj, Kaif, Powar, Zaheer, Irfan and Nehra, with a choice between Kaif/ Kartik.

Guys..you should have come to Moshpit.. the budding entrepreunership program. How I hope that I could have mouthed the words I just typed.First of all it( the MOSHPIT workshop) was at a venue which is in the dead interiors of Baltimore Downtown. We ( Vishal, Anubhav and I ) left at 4.30 pm for the show which was going to begin at 5.30. Reached downtown at 5 and then started the unsatiable search for that venue. We walked and walked that it seemed like eternity. Finally after finding ourselves in No Mans Land in some Italian dominant township in Downtown, totally exhausted, we decided it is high time we call it quits. Finally the Business and Entrepreunership workshop for us was endless walking and a quiet dinner at California Pizza kitchen with our own money, which was undoubtedly the only high point of the evening. Further irritation awaited us..now in the form of the " always ready to mess up"..Anubhav Sonthalia. He told us that bus no 31 leaves from downtown at 7.50 but that was the time it actually reached UMBC so we had to wait and wait to finally catch the 8.45 Gold Line. To sum it up..if there were an award for stupidly wasting time..We would get it !!
I think ganguly's quote was "Goodwill aside, we want to win". So thats not a bad attitude...who cares for goodwill...I mean a cricket series cant improve the relations between the 2 nations...
Saurav Ganguly has got guts and attitude.. for a player with his miniscule ability it was very brave of him to say the words " Goodwill aside, we will win". For this unfortunately he has to more than heavily rely on the abilities of the bigwigs in the team which oh so unfortunately does not include him ( Everything is measured in terms of ability in this blog).Well I just hope that we win..I dont care if its a narrow win or a hands down win..we should just beat the Pakis at their own ground.
And yeah Anubhav..your efforts for the blog are bearing fruit..minimal though..but slowly they are !

With ManU and Juve out of Champions League, its going to be a boring remainder of the campaign. I think Real might me knocked out too tomorrow. If that happens, then this year's winner is going to be tough to predict with 3-4 teams with a chance. Maybe ACmilan will win this year too....
